Oct. 17th, 2024 10:23 pmEvie was no stranger to bad luck and shitty circumstances, especially given the last six years of her life.
At eighteen, her father fell ill. Soon after (insanely soon after, if she thinks about it, which she refuses to), her mother divorced her dad and gained full custody of her sister, Lyssa. Her father was too ill to take her in and Evie, at the time, was living in the dorms at MIT. Not a place for a thirteen year old girl.
Evie moved back home to study and be closer to her dad to take care of him, put herself through university as she helped her father with his medical bills (And boy, were those insane).
And shortly after graduating, her father passed away. Just after she got a job working at Blume. Within a year of that, however, she was fired for asking too many questions and finding a job in her field had been damn difficult.
So now, she had three of them. A part time receptionist at a used car dealership, a bartender at a strip club and once or twice a week, an online tutor for people who want to learn computer programming.
She was lucky her uncle let her live over her fathers old butcher shop, as she'd lived the past couple years. But the rent was a bit much and, coupled with her fathers medical bills that she was still paying off, she was struggling a little more than she'd like to admit.
On her way home from the strip club, after a fairly slow night, it was the droplets of blood on the sidewalk that caught her attention. She was no stranger to blood. Between her own clumsiness, and growing up in a butcher shop, she really didn't flinch at it. No squeamish reaction, no panic. Just looking at it with a passing glance. But her curiosity, as always, was about to get her in trouble. The blood led into an alley, where she was sure she saw something moving in the shadows. At first, she was going to pass it off as an animal, until she heard a groan. It sounded human. Autotuned, or something, but definitely human.
She steps into the alley for a closer look, vaguely aware of shouts from down the road. She didn't think anything of it, until a pair of arms shot out of the shadows and pulled her close, one hand clamping over her mouth, and the feeling of several spiky things digging into her back.
Someone tells her to be quiet, but she interrupts that with a quick jab of her elbow to who-evers chest. She goes to speak, even with the hand over her mouth, but several people run by. Dressed in incredibly recognizable Auntie Shue Boys attire, followed swiftly by a Prime Eight member or two and Evie, smartly, decides to keep her mouth shut.
When she's sure it's safe, she grabs the wrist of the hand over her mouth and shoves it away. It was very tempting to bite that hand, but that would make noise and she gets the feeling that noise right now would be a terrible idea.
